Cherry Hill Road Fire Destroys Camper,
Damages Double Wide and Pickup
8-15-07 Fire
Wed, Aug 15, 11:15 AM

Raybon Scruggs was welding a bracket on his camper trailer and decided to take a break from the heat and go inside. The first indication there was a problem was his satellite TV went out.The welding had started a fire in the camper, in turn burned the satellite antenna cable and set the double wide on fire. Unfortunately, the only outside water hydrant and hose were located between the camper and the house. Raybon and members of his family attempted to keep the fire at bay with buckets of water from a nearby pond. Raybon hooked up his pickup and pulled the burning camper away from his home. When he attempted to disconnect the camper, the release handle was too hot. Using a water soaked throw rug Scruggs was able to release the lock, but when he attempted to drive away, he discovered his tailgate was still up and that prevented a clean break. The camper was totally destroyed, the home and pickup damaged, but there were no injuries. Firemen and equipment from Haleyville, Bear Creek and Delmar extinguished the fires.
